Holiday Shopping: 61% Want Connected Devices; Smart TVs Top the List

When it comes to receiving connected devices as holiday gifts, traditional television with smarts wins out.

And in terms of what smart devices consumers already own, the smart television leads that list as well.

More than half (51%) of consumers already have some smart devices connected in their homes, according to a survey of 2,000 U.S. adults conducted by Harris poll for myDevices, an IoT company.

For presents this holiday season, 61% would like to receive an IoT gift, with more people wanting smart TVs and the fewest (understandably) hoping for a do-it-yourself home security system under the tree. Here’s what they want:

  • 30% -- Smart TV
  • 19% -- Streaming media player
  • 18% -- Smartwatch
  • 15% -- Wearable fitness tracker
  • 13% -- Smart home thermostat
  • 12% -- Coffee maker
  • 9% -- Smart home lighting
  • 9% -- DIY connected home security

The top two desired connected devices also are the top two that many consumers already own. Demographically, 65% of consumers 18-to-34 years old own connected devices compared to 57% of those 35 to 44 and 40% of those 55 to 64 years old. Here’s what consumers say they already own:

  • 35% -- Television
  • 23% -- Streaming media player
  • 10% -- Wearable fitness tracker
  • 10% -- Home security systems
  • 8% -- Smoke detectors
  • 8% -- Home thermostats
  • 8% -- Home lighting

Whether consumers get the IoT gifts they want will be known soon enough. But no matter, technology for viewable content is high on the consumer’s Internet of Things list.
