Discovery Communications continues to build out its digital media business -- now with an investment and a partnership in digital media and content company Batanga Media.
The company, which
focused on content for Latin America and the U.S. Hispanic market, follows a deal Discovery made with Group Nine Media -- a unit that includes digital brands including The Dodo, NowThisMedia, Seeker
and Thrillist Media Group.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In October, Discovery made a minority investment of $100 million in Group Nine Media. Discovery has an
option to buy a controlling stake in Group Nine Media.
Batanga claims a monthly social reach of 215 million-plus; 40 million-plus Facebook followers; 780 million-plus video views in November;
as well as 90 million-plus uniques across its owned-and-operated properties, such as Vix, Batanga, iMujer and Bolsa de Mulher.
Batanga Media’s other major investors include HarbourVest
Partners, H.I.G. Ventures and Tudor Ventures.
Discovery initial push into digital began with the 2012 acquisition of digital network Revision3, which was followed up by a 2013 purchase online
video channels DeFranco Creative.
