Looking to take advantage of a fast-growing premium streaming environment, Plex, a streaming app for entertainment, movies, news, and music, is rolling out a new advertising-supported TV/movie option for consumers.
Plex says its new free, advertising-supported service will offer movies, cult classic favorites, documentaries and TV shows, with about one-third the number of commercials versus traditional TV.
Some of the movie content offered at launch with the new service includes movies such as “Frequency” (with Dennis Quaid); “Rain Man” (Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise); “Overboard” (Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell); “Teen Wolf” (Michael J. Fox ); and “The Terminator” (Arnold Schwarzenegger), Plex says.
Plex started over ten years ago as a media center app, giving users the ability to combine, organize and stream movies, tv shows, news, web shows, podcasts, music, live and recorded television, and personal media collections.
The advertising video-on-demand service (AVOD)-specific feature is available in more than 200 countries.
Plex will continue to offer subscription services, which include access to premium live TV and DVR, music, and other video. Plex has a $4.99/month price tag. Other options are: $39.99/year or $119.99 for a lifetime pass. Plex has 20 million users of its products.
Plex can be accessed on Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, smart TVs, Android and iOS mobile platforms, Xbox, PlayStation, and Amazon Fire TV.
