Facebook Pages Redesign Eliminates 'Like' Button To Focus On Followers

Facebook Pages has had a makeover. One of the most dramatic changes is the elimination of the “Like” button. The social network explains that rather than focusing on approval or disapproval with a “Like” button, the change will focus on Followers, a more direct measurement of how the page connects with people.

The elimination of the “Like” button, which identifies performance, only pertains to celebrities, businesses, politicians and other public figures. It doesn’t apply to everyone using the site.

The redesign includes a new look-and-feel, updated navigation, the introduction of a dedicated News Feed, a Q&A format for engaging fans, and other tools and insights, writes Asad Awan, head of public connections and monetization at Facebook.

"We are removing Likes and focusing on Followers to simplify the way people connect with their favorite Pages," he wrote. "Unlike Likes, Followers of a Page represent the people who can receive updates from Pages, which helps give public figures a stronger indication of their fan base."

And in another significant change, to increase the visibility of Page conversations to a wider audience and surface them more frequently in their followers’ News Feed, comments from public figures will be bumped to the top of the comments section.

Those using the social network also can follow Pages directly from comments and recommendations posts.

To support richer, interactive conversations, Facebook has introduced a text-based Q&A format.

Facebook has also added management features to assign and manage admin access permissions based on specific tasks. Those who own the page can grant varying levels of access to manage specific tasks including Insights, Ads, Content, and Community Activity & Messages.

Safety features also have been added. Facebook has improved its ability to detect activity that isn’t allowed on its platform including hate speech, violent and sexual content, or spam and impersonation.

The visibility of a verified badge to make it easier to identify posts and comments from authentic Pages and profiles will be improved. A verified Page’s comment on another Page’s public post, may appear higher in the comments section and be visible in News Feed.
