Volkswagen, Waze Partner To Add EV Chargers To Map

Volkswagen of America and Waze are partnering to allow Waze users to view EV charging stations on the Waze map for the first time.

The addition to the Waze platform allows drivers to search for EV charging stations along their route, reducing travel-related stress, per Waze, a subsidiary of Google that provides free satellite navigation software.

The app uses crowd sourcing for reports of traffic, road hazards and police.

As part of the launch, Waze users can also change their car icon to a Volkswagen ID.4 electric compact SUV, says Jeffrey Kohl, head of industry, Waze.

“Volkswagen is helping to shape what EV looks like on the Waze map and we're looking forward to highlighting the breadth of EV stations available across the US, especially  as more automotive brands move towards an electric future,” Kohl says in a statement.

There are nearly 1.8 million electric vehicles registered in the U.S., per Pew Research Center. While EVs continue to grow in popularity, “range anxiety” (the fear of running out of battery power before reaching a destination) continues to be at the forefront of drivers’ minds.

Volkswagen partnered with Electrify America this summer on a cross-country driving stunt that highlighted the ease of finding and using charging stations while on the go.  The 100-day drive included 48 states, 200 charging stations and 600 dealerships.
