PSA Stresses The 'Why' Of Cancer Research

“Cancer research saves lives,” declares Dr. Edith Perez, chief medical officer at immunotherapy developer Bolt Biotherapeutics, in a new public service announcement (PSA) produced by Done + Dusted for Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C).

Dr. Perez, who’s also vice chair of SU2C’s Scientific Advisory Committee and chair of its Health Equity Committee, joins four other SU2C-affiliated scientists and researchers in :60, :30 and :15 second PSAs titled "It's All In The Why."

“People are always asking me why. Why do I do this work?,” the PSA asks.

Answers Dr. Perez: “Everyday I think of the faces of patients when I see their smiles, when I tell them that new treatments are helping their lives.”

The aim of the PSA, which SU2C says will run for 12 months via donated media from broadcast networks and affiliates, out-of-home networks and digital platforms, is to stress the importance of continued funding for cancer research.

SU2C is best known for its live biannual multichannel fundraising TV shows, with a longer version of the new PSA having aired originally during the seventh such event in August 2021. SU2C confirmed to Marketing Daily that another show is coming this year, but details are yet to be announced.

SU2C says it has given $746 million in funding to cancer research programs since its founding in 2008, with SU2C-funded research contributing to the development of nine new FDA-approved cancer therapies for bladder, breast, colorectal, ovarian, pancreatic and prostate cancers, as well as difficult-to-treat leukemias in children and young adults.

The nonprofit also focuses on health equity issues, such as a recent radio PSA campaign done in conjunction with Jazz Pharmaceuticals that was designed to increase awareness of, and screenings for, small cell lung cancer among Blacks and Hispanics.
