Peacock Backs Off 'Most Live Sports' Claim

NBCUniversal’s Peacock has quietly removed copy on its site claiming that it has the “most live sports of any streamer,” following objections from DirecTV.

DirecTV challenged the claim after Comcast CEO Brian Roberts repeated it during the company’s earnings call last week.

DirecTV Stream is actually a virtual multichannel video programming distributor (vMVPD), providing access to the full array of programming available through the DirecTV traditional-TV satellite service, at a cost of $64.99 per month.

As such, it offers tens of thousands of hours of live sports programming through ESPN, Fox and various cable and local channels.

Peacock, a subscription-based video-on-demand (SVOD) service, costs $5.99 per month with ads or $11.99 without ads, and says it offers more than 8,000 hours of live sports per year.

Still, DirecTV Stream technically meets the definition of a streaming service, since it delivers content through the internet.

Peacock’s claim was “unsubstantiated hubris” that “muddies the water for consumers truly looking to stream the best sports experience,” a DirecTV spokesperson asserted to Cord Cutters News.

Peacock hasn’t commented on the verbal dustup, except to delete the copy from its site.
