TikTok Rolls Out A Communal Video Feed

Following the rollout of its recent “Nearby Feed,” TikTok is continuing to experiment with its home feed experiences, announcing “Shared Feed” -- a way for users to take part in communal scrolling.

According to the ByteDance-owned company’s announcement, the Shared Feed feature is organized around the content users share with each other via direct messaging, allowing friends and family to view the videos they send each other together, but at different times.

Every day, TikTok’s Shared Feed features a “curated selection” of 15 videos within a group of users’ private chat based on their combined interests.

“Each Shared Feed is unique to the people who join it, and videos are generated based on their TikTok activity, such as what they like, watch, and comment on,” the company’s announcement explains.

As the Shared Feed feature rolls out globally over the next few months, users are able to invite each other to start a Shared Feed, on which they can message, comment and like the videos curated for them.

After all the 15 daily videos have been viewed by all users involved in the feed group they can view metrics, including which videos they both liked in their Shared Like history. Users are able to disregard invitations or leave a Shared Feed at any time.

Shared Feed comes days after TikTok launched its “Nearby Feed,” another variation on the traditional video feed designed to connect users with content in more direct ways.

While Shared Feed aims to connect users with one another by recommending communal interests, the Nearby Feed connects users with local content and trending places, recommending posts based on users’ geographic locations.

Instagram also rolled out a feature similar to Shared Feed in April called “Blend,” which invites users to create custom feeds within the direct messaging space.
