Google announced five updates to AI
Overviews and AI Mode in Search on Wednesday, which are all intended to improve context and highlight relevant links. The most significant part of the announcement is Google's reliance
on social-media posts and online discussions to share advice from "experts."
While AI Overviews already links to social-media posts for some responses, the latest update now shows
direct quotes from people sharing opinions and firsthand experiences on Reddit and other online communities.
Google explains how it will include posts from people who can offer "expert advice,"
but lacks clarity on how it determines whether the advice is from an expert, other than suggesting those who have been to a specific destination or experienced a specific event can be considered an
expert.
For example, for those researching how to take pictures of the Northern Lights, Google may surface quotes from a photography forum with advice on exposure time, along with
clickable links, featuring the specific community name, allowing the person to join the conversation.

Google has also added context to AI search links such as a creator's name, handle,
or community name, to help those who are searching decide on the discussions to read or participate in, according to the post.
Links are now available directly in AI responses for those who
would like to search for more information on a specific topics.
For example, when searching for information about a California bike trip, the person may see a series of bulleted points about
the route.
With this update, those searching may now see a link to a Pacific Coast bike-touring guide right next to the bulleted point about terrain, or a link to a blog post with training
suggestions next to the bulleted point about daily mileage.
This update can help advertisers and content creators by increasing higher-intent traffic and
providing contextual information on a subject.
For advertisers, the integration of direct links within AI responses changes search from a "keyword bidding" model to an
"intent-matching"
model. It allows brands to reach consumers even if overall click volume for simple queries decreases.
Google will continue to change the way it shows and ranks links in
generative AI search experiences and use of techniques like query fan-out, which helps the technology delve deeper into the web to find the most relevant sites for searches.
