Google will close down its Google Checkout online payment service for good in November of this year. The online service and technology provider says the move is part of a broader transition to its Google Wallet multichannel commerce platform.

Even though a full 33% of all retailers have no plans to adopt mobile POS, the technology is still having a significant impact on the point-of-sale market. According to the new IHL Group study, Mobile POS: Hype to Reality, mobile POS will cannibalize 12.4% of traditional POS shipments in North America by 2016. The highest replacement rates will be seen in department stores and specialty soft goods retailers.

It had all the makings of a great mobile commerce app: It looked good, it was easy to use, and it allowed viewers to buy all the latest fashions really easily.

Time Inc.'s All You has added shoppable capabilities to its tablet edition. Starting with the May issue, customers using an iPad or Kindle Fire can tap a "shop now" icon to see where the product is for sale with a direct link to purchase.

Department store chain Saks Fifth Avenue is luring consumers into its stores through a banner advertisement on the Weather Channel's mobile application. A click-through on the ad leads to a store locator so that consumers can find the closest Saks location to them. Saks is likely trying to reach consumers who are nearby its stores, but having the ad on a weather app may not be the best place to target its customers.
