Google Shopping Goes Live With Price-Tracking Email Alerts, Visual Search, Clean Energy Incentive

The Google Shopping experience that launched earlier this year is now live in the U.S. across mobile and desktop and has an added an incentive that might persuade ecologically minded consumers to click “buy.”

Google says it will invest in clean energy products to offset the carbon emission created from buying online and shipping orders.

In September the company announced an initiative to help offset climate change based on the energy it uses to run servers supporting services such as search, email, online video, and cloud computing for billions of people worldwide.

Clean energy products also offset tools like the personalized recommendations feature in Google Shopping. This feature is based on historic searches and the ability to find the lowest price, which both require lots of energy to do their job.

The price-tracking feature allows users to tag products and receive notifications. Price-tracking notifications were previously only available as a mobile alert, but on Thursday an email alert became available.

The official launch highlights a colorful shopping icon with the ability to “Buy on Google” from the page. The experience, which was announced in May 2019, combines Google Express with Google Shopping.

Google Shopping offers information from thousands of stores and millions of products. One section helps users reorder common items or continue their shopping research. When consumers are ready to make a purchase, they can choose to purchase online, at a nearby store, or directly from retailers on Google.

Google also announced today that Google Lens will get a new function called “style ideas.” Style search was an early capability that allowed users to point Lens at clothing, fashion items, and furniture to find the product online.

It helps consumers style similar looks by taking a screenshot of a favored item, and uses Lens in Google Photos to see how other people have styled similar looks.
