TV Set Maker LG Electronics Buys Controlling Stake In TV Data Company Alphonso

Smart TV set manufacturer LG Electronics has bought a controlling stake of more than 50% in Alphonso, a TV/OTT data research company for nearly $80 million.

Alphonso says it will continue to operate as an independent business under its current brand.

“Our investment in Alphonso is a key component of our digital transformation strategy focusing on AI, big data and cloud to fundamentally change how consumers interact with their devices,” stated Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company.

Other major smart TV set manufacturers-- such as Samsung and Vizio -- have already aligned themselves with TV data analysis businesses. In August 2015, Vizio acquired Cognitive Media Networks which was renamed Inscape. Samsung has started up Samsung Ads in 2015.

Hyoung-sei adds: “With Alphonso's TV data analysis capabilities, LG will be able to provide even more customized services and content to consumers and we are proud to welcome Alphonso to the LG family.”

Ashish Chordia, founder/chief executive officer of Alphonso, stated: “Becoming part of LG Electronics gives Alphonso the backing of one of the world's leaders in home entertainment products, with access to a massive global inventory of connected TV screens.”
