"We have an investment in OpenAI Global, LLC ("OpenAI")
and have made total funding commitments of $13 billion," Microsoft wrote in the SEC filing. "The investment is accounted for under the equity method of accounting."
The company listed in
the filing under "Other, net primarily reflects net recognized losses on equity method investments, including OpenAI."
“Microsoft's massive investment in OpenAI, and the company's
willingness to allow that investment to impact profit reports, speaks to the importance of generative AI as a competitive differentiator in search, workplace tools, and related SaaS
products." Damian Rollison, director of marketing at SOCi, wrote in an email to MediaPost. "Even as OpenAI works to develop its own search capabilities, Microsoft still needs the company's AI
technology to maintain Bing's position in the search market."
