Pinterest Updated Tool, Features Help Users Reduce 'AI Slop'

Following previous attempts to cut down on the proliferation of low-quality AI-generated spam content -- or “AI Slop” -- Pinterest announced it is launching an updated tool designed to enable users to limit the amount of AI-generated content they see on their Pinterest feeds.

“Now, users can dial down the AI and add more of a human touch,” the company wrote in a recent blog post. “Our updated tuner lets users see less GenAI content on eligible image Pins in certain categories that are highly prone to AI modification or generation like beauty, art, fashion and home decor.”

According to Pinterest's statement, the company decided to introduce the anti-AI Slop toggle after receiving feedback from its user base.

Pinterest's dedicated Reddit page, for example, highlights users' collective annoyance at the sudden onslaught of low-quality AI content and the inability to filter it out of their feeds.

“I've tried blocking all the accounts I come across that post AI gen pics but it hasn't changed anything,” one Reddit user posted earlier this year. Another user said, “ I used to love browsing interior design ideas and decoration ideas, but now so many of those are just the same AI slop of a dimly lit room with a billion fairy lights.”

After these comments were posted, Pinterest introduced a new policy label to AI-generated images via proprietary AI detection technology, displaying the “generated or modified with AI” warning in the foreground of an image Pin.

While these GenAI labels will become more noticeable over the coming weeks -- according to Pinterest -- the company is taking its war against AI-generated content one step further by inviting users to manually adjust their recommendations algorithm in relation to GenAI content within their Settings preferences.

Per its announcement, Pinterest plans to introduce more GenAI features while also ramping up its detection tools.
