Anthropic, Australia Agree To AI Safety Rules

Anthropic signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Australian government to follow specific AI safety and research rules, when CEO Dario Amodei met Prime Minister Albanese in Canberra to confirm the agreement.

The company also announced AUD$3 million partnerships with Australian research institutions to use Claude for disease diagnosis, treatment, and computer science education.

While the MOU signed this week does not directly regulate advertising, it introduces several factors that may shift the environment for brands using or marketing with AI in Australia.

Amodei discussed Wednesday the need for a copyright deal that "works for everyone" during his official visit to Canberra to sign the MOU with the Australian government. His remarks were made as part of a conversation during the Anthropic Futures Forum held at Parliament House, as he also used the visit to address the ongoing tension between AI developers and the Australian creative sector, according to reports.

The potential impact on advertisers points to Anthropic’s willingness to follow the Australian government’s “voluntary” guidelines and existing laws rather than rigid AI legislation. Advertisers have more flexibility to align with safety standards established by the Australian AI Safety Institute.

A data-sharing agreement is a core piece of the MOU. Anthropic agreed to share its Economic Index data with the government to track AI adoption across sectors such as financial services and healthcare, for example.

Anthropic also this week launched for eligible companies a $50,000 API credit program for deep-tech startups in Australia. It’s meant for smaller ad-tech firms or agencies developing specialized AI tools for medical or educational sectors.

The investments reflect the advanced work Australian researchers and startups are already doing with Claude, and directly contribute to supporting the goals outlined in Australia’s National AI Plan.

There are advertising agencies and brands using Claude, Anthropic’s chatbot and API, despite Anthropic’s stance to slow integration into its own chatbots.

Brainlabs developed an automated SEO audit tool using Claude that learns from the agency's entire history of past audits. StawberryFrog built a skill that evaluates creative briefs, and Monks standardizes brand voice and best practices for global clients.
