IAB Tech Lab, the standards arm of the Interactive Advertising
Bureau, has announced new rules to ensure that totals for podcast listeners and advertising numbers from downloads and clicks are calculated accurately.
Podcasts rely heavily on the ability to
analyze data on the server side because files are downloaded to a device rather than streamed live.
Measurement only works if everyone is counting the same way, Anthony Katsur, CEO, IAB Tech
Lab, stated. The updates give the industry clear guidance for today's podcast ecosystem and help reduce inconsistencies.
The Podcast Index logs daily data about podcasting. It reports that as of July 21, 2026, there are about 4.7 million podcasts in its directory, with a total of 164,170,980 podcast episodes, an average of 34.9 episodes per show.

About one in three people in the U.S. listen to
podcasts on YouTube, making it the most popular platform for podcasts, but the global podcast market is estimated to be worth $39.63
billion.
In mid-July, WARC released its Platform Insights report, which focuses on YouTube. It reported that YouTube overtook Spotify for podcast viewing. Viewers
watched more than 700 million hours of podcasts on YouTube via TV screens in a month, up 70% year-on-year.
More than $40 billion is attributed to global ad
revenue on YouTube in 2025, up 11.7% compared with the prior year, according to WARC, but its year-on-year ad-revenue growth decelerated from 14.7% in 2024 to 11.7% in 2025, and is forecast to drop to
7.9% by 2027.
The 2025 IAB/PwC Internet Advertising Revenue Report, commissioned by the IAB and conducted by PwC Advisory Services, found that overall digital audio -- a category that
includes podcasts, streaming music, and streaming radio -- reached $8.4 billion in 2025. This is up 10.2% year-over-year from $7.6 billion in 2024, which seem to be the most recent numbers.
In an older report from the IAB, estimates put podcasts on track to reach $2.6 billion by 2026 for ad revenue. The report was published in May 2024, which seems like a lifetime ago.
Improvements in
measurement and the evolution in programmatic buying -- along with revenues tied to video and live events -- are expected to contribute to future positive outlooks.
IAB Tech Lab's release of
the Podcast Technical Measurement Guidelines v2.3 is an update to the industry's technical framework for measuring podcast downloads, audience, and ad delivery using server-side log data.
The
latest update bridges this gap by ensuring performance advertisers can accurately calculate customer acquisition costs (CACs) and return on ad spend (ROAS) without distorted top-of-funnel metrics.
The updated guidelines clarify a consistent measurement system for audio and video podcasts that are distributed through open RSS feeds and podcast applications. The guidelines are available for
public comment for 30 days until August 19, 2026.
Hugo Martel, senior vice president of podcast and content Delivery at Triton Digital, believes server-side log data remains the backbone of
podcast measurement, and these updates reflect the continued evolution of the medium.
He welcomes clear guidance for video podcast measurement, and believes the industry will adapt as podcast
consumption expands across formats, giving publishers and advertisers greater confidence in the data.
