Samsung is looking to “wow” sports fans the world over this year with the release of its “Wireless Olympics Works” app that will turn people’s Android-powered
phones into mobile sports stations that deliver personalized Olympics experiences.
First developed as a mobile data service for Olympics Games staff for operational
communications during the 2004 games in Athens, the new Wireless Olympics Works is a resource for officials, attendees, athletes and fans around the world for use during the Olympic Games, according
to a company representative.
“The WOW app is a great way to showcase Samsung’s people-inspired technologies in a way that unites Olympic fans globally and brings
them closer to the Games,” the representative tells Marketing Daily in response to e-mailed questions.
The app provides fans with real-time access to event
schedules, results, medal standings and Olympic records. The app also includes a “cheering service” through which fans can send support to their favorite athletes and countries, and a
social networking component easily enabling fans to upload text and images with other WOW users and through their social networks.
The Wireless Olympics Works (which supports
seven languages) also includes information on all 15 winter sports, including video tutorials on each sport covering the rules, equipment details and other points of interest. It will also provide
venue information and navigation for peope attending the games in Sochi. Samsung will promote the app through marketing and social media campaigns, as well as through demos at Samsung’s Galaxy
Studio at the games in Sochi.
