Social Media Rules In Bing App Searches

Microsoft Bing has released a list of top searches on its search engine in the U.S. across a number of categories for 2014. The list, posted to BingTrends, reveals that half of the most-searched apps this year relate to social media, with Facebook claiming the No. 1 spot. Skype is the only video communication application on the list, coming in at No. 4.

The most searched-for apps include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Skype, Vine, Snapchat, Candy Crush Saga, WhatsApp, Angry Bird, and Farmville. The top gaming apps are Candy Crush and Angry Birds again this year, with newcomer to the list Farmville appearing in the number ten spot.

Top Devices include the iPhone 6 at No. 1 , with Xbox and Fitbit in No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

"The Big Bang Theory" topped the list of most-searched TV shows, followed by 'Dancing with the Stars." "Frozen" took the crown for most searched movie in 2014. Kim Kardashian took Beyonce's spot as the most-searched person this year, from her Vogue cover to the extravagant wedding.

Sports dominated the news in 2014, with the long-awaited World Cup, surprising Super Bowl performance and controversial Winter Olympics. Coming in the #3 spot, the mystery behind the missing Malaysia Airlines Jet captivated our attention, as searchers looked for answers to the tragedy. The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks surpassed the Dallas Cowboys as the most-searched sports team this year.

It's interesting to note the difference in what impacts searches per country. In the U.S., the top five news events that had the greatest impact began with the World Cup at No. 1, followed by Super Bowl, Missing Malaysia Airlines jet, Winter Olympics, and ISIS. In the United Kingdom the top five were the Ice Bucket challenge, #BingBackOurGirls, Gus Kenworthy and the Sochi puppies, birthday cards for 6-year-old Danny Nickerson, and Boston Marathon victim marries his nurse.
