Rakuten Combines New York Fashion Week Message In Super Bowl Ad

How does a brand or company attract more attention? It combines two of the most iconic events of the year in one television ad.

Rakuten announced a partnership with fashion designer Christian Siriano -- who designed the yellow plaid suit worn by Alicia Silverstone in her role as Cher Horowitz -- in Rakuten’s Super Bowl LVII ad that will air this Sunday.

The full advertisement was released on Monday with a theme that reinforces the benefits of saving while shopping at Rakuten.

Previously, the company released a teaser. The ad updates the Not So Clueless ad, and in response Horowitz said: “Among other things.”

Siriano also designed three separate Clueless-themed looks featured on the runway at the upcoming New York Fashion Week.

As the biggest football game and the fashion event of the year are about to converge, Rakuten shoppers will have a chance to win the three Clueless looks for themselves.

Siriano has a cameo in the spot as one of the students in Horowitz’s class. He signs a heart on his chest while sitting in the classroom.

With 1990s trends back in full swing, the 30-second ad blends nostalgia, shopping and savings. The film, in which Silverstone played Horowitz, is known for its vibrant fashion courtesy of Mona May, the film’s costume designer, and Amy Heckerling, the director, according The New York Times.

“In conclusion, you have to be butt crazy to shop without Rakuten,” Horowitz said.
