OpenAI’s ChatGPT is on track to reach 700 million weekly active users, up from 500 million at the end of March and 4× since last year.
More users means potentially more
ad-buying on the platform.
ChatGPT does not have a traditional ad model, but OpenAI has stated in the past they were exploring a variety of revenue streams, including the possibility of
advertising in the future to keep part of its services free.
“Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and solving harder problems,” Nick Turley, vice president
and head of ChatGPT App, wrote in a post on X. “Grateful to the team for making ChatGPT more useful and delivering on our mission so everyone can benefit from AI.”
The news comes
as OpenAI is set to release GPT-5 sometime this summer; The Verge reported as early as August. This AI system will incorporate distinct models and can perform different functions as opposed to just
one AI model.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated in February the company is working to simplify its offerings by unifying its o-series models and GPT-series models to create systems that can use all
the company’s tools for a range of tasks.
“We want AI to ‘just work’ for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten,” Altman
wrote.
Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower recently reported people are using ChatGPT for more than 12 days a
month on average, only behind Google and X. In the first half of 2025, users spent an average of 16 minutes per day on the app.
Adobe Express also released numbers, but there’s a bit of
a dip when it comes to trust. Its recent data shows that while more people use AI chatbots like ChatGPT to search, they still want to trust the answers they get. Helpful, clear, and fast results tend
to matter most.
Fifty-four percent of people said they most often choose to search on ChatGPT because the tool can summarize complex topics quickly. One third of those surveyed also liked that
ChatGPT required fewer clicks than Google to find what they need while searching.
The majority of people, 82%, preferred using ChatGPT for creative, open-ended questions, and 77% reported that
the results felt more personalized than Google's results.
