Google's Android operating system has almost no presence on traditional PCs -- where Google instead has relied on Chrome OS -- but soon that will change, according to reports.
This could change
the way advertisers view Android because it would offer them a larger, more
integrated and versatile ecosystem that blends the detailed targeting capabilities of mobile with immersive ad formats of desktop.
Despite Google’s efforts to challenge
Windows' dominance, Chrome OS remains a distant third in terms of adoption. As of September 2025, ChromeOS holds a 1.53% global desktop market share -- increasing to
8.44% in the United States, largely driven by K-12 education and enterprise sectors, according to one report.

Enterprise adoption rates have accelerated. The report notes that small and medium-sized businesses demonstrate that the 3.2% Chrome OS adoption rate has risen mostly by companies wanting to reduce
total cost of ownership and simplify device management compared with traditional desktop operating systems.
The new OS would expand Android's use to the PC, to advertisers that may have
previously focused on mobile Android users. It would unify campaigns, support cross AI advancements and new targeting opportunities and metrics, and expand from mobile only to
desktop.Last weekend, Android Authority noticed on a link onTelegram that has since been deleted. It was a link to a Google job listing for a senior
product manager for Android, laptops and tablets.
It has already been reported that Google is bringing Android to the PC, but the listing stated the role
involved "working on a new Aluminium, Android-based, operating system," which confirmed the codename for the unified platform.
"The name appears to be a nod to the project’s roots: like
Chromium (the open-source version of Chrome OS), Aluminium is a metal ending in "-ium." The choice of the British spelling — emphasizing the ‘Al’ prefix — likely pays homage to
Android serving as the project’s foundation," according to the report.
Through this integration, advertisers would gain access to the significant PC market share, which is currently
dominated by Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS -- expanding the potential audience for existing Android apps and services.
