Amazon Proceeds With Announced Shutdown Of Kindle Newsstand

The shutdown of Kindle Newsstand announced by Amazon earlier this year has now taken effect.

The tech giant stopped selling print and Kindle, magazine and newspaper subscriptions earlier this week.

The company will issue pro-rated refunds for any undelivered issues from Kindle subscriptions, it says.

Monthly and annual Kindle Newsstand subscriptions will no longer renew.

Print magazine subscribers are advised to contact publishers directly to cancel subscriptions.

Subscribers can still access issues that have already been delivered.

Last March, Amazon said to publishers, “We don’t take these decisions lightly. We are winding down this program in a phased manner and will work with you throughout the wind-down process to help ensure the best experience possible for our mutual customers.”

However, one publisher has partly blamed Amazon for going out of business: Fantasy magazine, according to The Verge.

“Unfortunately Fantasy never reached a point of paying for itself, and with the Kindle Periodicals mess it’s just not sustainable,” the magazine said in an August editorial.
