    The teddy bear may be in danger of being replaced by the tablet. According to a Nielsen survey of adults with children under 12 in tablet-owning households, 70% of children in those homes used a tablet computer in the fourth quarter. That’s up from 61% in just the prior quarter. More than three-quarters (77%) of parents surveyed said their kids play downloaded games on tablets and 57% used them to access educational apps. The study found 43% of kids watch TV and movies on tablets but only 15% use them for communicating with friends and family. Tablets have also …

  • Zillow Cites Growing Mobile Usage
    In announcing fourth-quarter earnings Wednesday, real estate site Zillow highlighted gains in mobile usage that it says have contributed to traffic and revenue growth. In December, for instance, homes were viewed on its Zillow Mobile app nearly 100 million times, or 36 homes per second. In January, that figure increased to 53 homes viewed per second. The Zillow app is available across all major smartphone platforms including the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone. In November, it also launched new apps for the Kindle Fire and iPad.   • Oscar Advertisers: Many Happy Returns
    ABC's "84th Academy Awards" list of advertisers will feature many of the usual suspects. The network, in releasing a partial list, says American Express, AT&T, Coca-Cola, Hyundai, JCPenney, Kraft, McDonalds, MetLife, Paramount Pictures, Samsung, Sprint, Stella Artois, Travelocity, and Walt Disney Studios will be some of the advertisers. The show, to be aired Sunday, February 26, has been selling 30-second commercials at around $1.7 million. Last year it pulled in an audience of 37.9 million viewers.
  • Report: Mobile Malware Attacks Up 155% In 2011
    A new report from Juniper Networks underscores the downside of the Android Market’s hands-off approach to approving apps. In its annual Mobile Threats Report, it reported a record number of mobile malware attacks, especially to the Android platform. While there was a 155% rise in mobile malware across all mobile operating systems last year, attacks targeting Android jumped 3,325% in just the last seven months of 2011.
