Time Inc.’s Essence magazine is expanding its high-profile Essence Festival franchise overseas, with this week’s announcement that Durban, South Africa will host major events in 2016 and 2016. According to the publisher the Essence Festival Durban will follow the format of the annual New Orleans event, presenting international performers, speakers, artists and experts, with an eye to empowering small businesses and individuals with career and development initiatives. Essence president Michelle Ebanks stated: “Hosting our first international Essence Festival in Durban purposefully extends our mission to convene the diaspora around shared aspirations.”
