Tom Turkey Debuts In Google's First Fully AI-Generated Ad

Google released its first fully AI-generated advertisement on Friday, featuring a turkey looking for airline flights through AI Mode, the company's AI-based search tool.

The turkey wants to escape the farm -- to fly the coop on any day but Thanksgiving.

While social media and television have been flooded with AI-generated videos since the release of Google Veo 3, OpenAI Sora, and xAI Grok Imagine, there have been no ads of this kind from Google until now.

All the tools can generate high-quality videos from text prompts, and some can be generated from one image. Others include tools from Adobe and Microsoft.

Google's first fully AI-generated ad will run on television and social and digital media as well as in movie theaters beginning Saturday, according to the company, with a holiday-themed ad to follow.

A male voice introduces Tom the turkey in the ad. He explains that Tom must fly the coop, and fast. "Luckily, AI Mode in Google Search can help him hatch a plan," the voiceover says. "It's gotta be quick and it's gotta be .. yeah."

Google Creative Lab, the company's in-house marketing group, developed the idea for the ad.

Robert Wong, co-founder and a vice president of Google Creative Lab, told The Wall Street Journal that the ad was developed to play on seasonal nostalgia and the animated holiday specials that may remind consumers of their childhood, before deciding to create it with Veo 3 and other AI tools.

The identification of synthetic content has become increasingly important. While watching YouTube, Google adds "linked to" notes on other pages where viewers can find information about how content was made.

This information, found in the video player or description, offers insight into the content's origin and whether it has been meaningfully altered. The "How this content was made" section in the expanded video description on YouTube provides further details.

The description of the ad highlights that it was made with Google products, but the message points to the use of AI Mode in Google Search to help find flight and hotel information from the web, no matter how specific.

The message highlights the ability to ask for a destination, dates, or describe a particular type of trip. Google's AI Mode returns complete answers, no matter how complicated the travel question or plans are.

Altered or synthetic content will be highlighted in credits. Google defines this as "content that has been meaningfully altered or synthetically generated."
