OpenAI Adds Visual Format, Makes ChatGPT Ads More Measurable

OpenAI on Monday announced a visual ad format for ChatGPT that will display these ads alongside results while users generate images.

The ad unit expands its measurement tools and partnerships, as it works with brands to understand suitability.

The new visual ad format shows how people can discover a new brand, understand what makes an offering distinctive, and decide what to buy.

For advertisers, this creates new opportunities to tell their story through images, the company said in a blog post.

Testing will begin in the U.S. later this month with an initial group of advertisers.

Initially, OpenAI will test the new ad format during image generation in ChatGPT, with ads clearly labeled. They will remain separate from the image being created by the chatbot.

Like its other ad formats, advertising will not influence the answers that ChatGPT provides.

Since February when ChatGPT launched the first ads, brands have had a difficult time measuring return on investments. OpenAI changed that today with its latest round of updates, as it attempts to help brands monetize clicks and requests from 1.2 billion weekly users.

The company is piloting brand-suitability evaluations with DoubleVerify (DV) and Integral Ad Science (IAS) to give advertisers greater insight into the ad environment. These independent partners will review how ChatGPT applies its brand-safety standards in a controlled test setting, without access to private user conversations.

As OpenAI continues to build out essential required metrics with tools and partners that businesses need to track whether their ChatGPT Ads generate sales and return on investments (ROI), it has partnered with Tealium, LiveRamp, and Hightouch to act as secure data pipelines for conversion data.

This integration allows the website or database owner to automatically tell ChatGPT Ads: "Hey, someone just purchased a coat, and they clicked a ChatGPT ad earlier in the day."

Attribution partners have been added, including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin to enable conversions API, reporting, and click attribution reporting.

Full-funnel and advanced measurement partners including Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL have also been added.

Incrementality measurement partners now include Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic to explore geo-based experiments to help advertisers understand the causal impact of ChatGPT Ads.

Monday’s updates are part of OpenAI’s strategy to focus on helping consumers discover products and services, evaluate options, and make decisions to purchase products based on what they see in ChatGPT.
