    Bridgestone has signed a five-year deal extending its relationship with the National Hockey League putting its name for several years on the Leagues New Year's Day winter event, the NHL Winter Classic. The deal, also with the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) and the Hockey Hall of Fame (HHOF) includes both Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations) and Bridgestone Canada Inc.     After being announced in March, Wired magazine's digital edition for the iPad has finally launched. The $4.99 app built buy Adobe (but not using Flash) enhances Wired's graphics-laden pages with interactive elements and multimedia including video and animation.   • Walmart Is Testing A 'Virtual Mirror'
    Wal-Mart is reportedly testing a cosmetics system called the Wal-Mart virtual mirror, which uses a barcode reader and a digital camera for the virtual application of makeup, reports Evan Schuman's StorefrontBacktalk, a retail technology blog. The test is happening in 10 different stores, with four mirrors per store. If successful, it may have benefits "beyond mere increased sales, such as reduced shrink (no need to throw out lipstick after a test), better availability of product and some natural social-shopping benefits via email," he writes. --Sarah Mahoney

    While price is a key motivator in the insurance shopping process and final purchase decision, its impact on new-buyer satisfaction has declined compared with one year ago, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study. Erie Insurance ranks highest in new-buyer satisfaction for a third consecutive year. Price is the leading reason -- cited by 41% of shoppers -- that insurance shoppers consider an insurer but do not obtain a quote from that insurer.   • 'Coke Happiness Machine' Version To Air On 'Idol'
    Coke is set to air a :30 spot during tonight's "American Idol" finale based on a two-minute-long video, "Coke Happiness Machine," that has gotten nearly 2.3 million views on YouTube since being posted in January. Definition 6 worked with Coca-Cola to create the viral video to spread happiness across a college campus -- complementing Coke's global "Open Happiness" advertising campaign.     Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, will step down from the company this fall, according to Microsoft. The executive launched and drove innovation for products such as Xbox and Windows Phone. Don Mattrick, senior vice president for Microsoft's interactive entertainment business, and Andy Lees, senior vice president for the company's mobile communications business, will report to Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer, beginning July 1, the company said
  • Bag Ladies: Women's Accessories Sales Up 20%
    First quarter sales of fashion accessories rose 17% in the first quarter, reports NPD, with sales of women's accessories gaining 20%. Handbag sales were especially strong, with dollar volume up 31% compared to the first quarter of the prior year. And sales of handbags with an average price of $100 were up 46%, evidence that women are tiptoeing back toward higher-end products.
