    Mazda North American Operations has confirmed that it is in “contract negotiations” with a major agency holding company – WPP Group – to handle its account. The move follows an extensive review, and incumbent Doner’s announcement earlier today that it was parting with the auto marketer. WPP has handled Mazda Motor Europe for more than 12 years, and will now be responsible for the U.S., Canada and Mexico, as well.

    Former Omnicom media honcho Steve Grubbs has announced his second consulting gig in as many weeks. Grubbs, who was former North American CEO of Omnicom's PHD unit, has become a senior strategic advisor to interactive TV developer BrightLine iTV. Last week, Grubbs announced he had joined the advisory board of out-of-home media operator Automated Media Services.

    The mobile devices are poised to overtake computers as the most common devices for accessing the Internet, according to new research from Interpublic's Initiative unit. Using its online consumer panel, Initiative contacted 8,000 active smartphone users across Italy, Sweden, UK, USA, Australia, China, India and South Korea, and found that, given the choice between only having mobile Internet and only having computer-based Internet, one-third of consumers currently opt for mobile Internet, rising to nearly half among "Innovators," the most technically advanced users, the agency said.     The estimated value of BP's brand has fallen by nearly $1 billion since the April 21st explosion on the Deepwater Horizon, according to a new report by technology firm General Sentiment. The Media Value Report, which measures the oil giant's reputation, shows nearly unprecedented levels of negative sentiment online. Since June 1st, BP has lost more than $32 million a day in brand value.   • Google's Schmidt, Russian Pres Talk Oil Independence
    Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will meet with Google Chief Executive Officer Eric Schmidt during his trip to the U.S. this week, MarketWatch reports. The Russian President will spend a day in Silicon Valley before heading to Washington Thursday to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama. Marketwatch reports the Russian President has made weaning the country off its dependence on oil profits a focus of his presidency. Another meeting is planned with an exec at Cisco.
  • Google Developing Paid Content Platform For Publishers
    Will Google support a pay wall platform for publishers with the technology behind Google Checkout? The Mountain View, Calif., company will soon launch a payment system allowing people to buy content with one click, as well as publishers to charge for that content on PC, mobile or tablet devices, according to the Italian online publication La Repubblica.it. Dubbed Newspass, the platform would give publishers a pay wall. La Repubblica.it reports Google has contacted publishers to test the platform.
