Another app closes another big funding round. TechCrunch reports
Evernote, the startup behind the popular note-taking app of the same name, will today announce securing an additional $50 million in financing in a round led by Sequoia Capital and including Morgenthaler Ventures. The company, which has previously raised $20 million, says it will use the new funding to fuel its expansion, including acquisitions. With a platform that works across PCs, mobile phones and other connected devices, Evernote boasts 11 million users--up 1 million since June. Mobile ad network Mojiva has closed a $25 million funding round led by Shamrock Capital Advisors and including prior investors Pelion Venture Partners and Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments. It has raised more than $35 million to date. The company plans to use the new capital to fund global presence of their two business units, the Mojiva ad network and the Mocean Mobile ad serving platform. More than half (53%) of 2,400 mobile users surveyed by mobile content provider Myxer in the second quarter said they had made a purchase with their device. Within that grouop, 19% said they made two to five mobile purchases a month, and 16%, 10 purchases. Digital music accounted for nearly seven in 10 (68%) of transactions. Convenience was cited by users as the top factor (37%) in using their phones to shop, followed by price (24%), and the "cool" factor (22%). Younger mobile users (18-24) preferred carrier-based billing while those 35-54 preferred credit cards. Read more

Google chairman Eric Schmidt will testify at an upcoming Senate hearing about competition in online search, Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) said Friday. Lee said in a statement that he was "pleased" that Schmidt had agreed to answer lawmakers' questions. "I look forward to discussing a number of important issues relating to Google and Internet search competition," Lee said in a statement. Lee along with Sen. Eight months after getting the iPhone, Verizon Wireless accounts for nearly a third (32%) of iPhone 4s in the U.S. market, according to app analytics provider
Localytics. The firm bases its estimate on usage of the 1,500 apps that use its software for analytics tracking on the Apple smartphone. Localytics said Verizon had gained ground on AT&T in iPhone share especially in the last two months, possibly driven by people scooping up Verizon iPhone before the carrier did away with its unlimited data plan. eBay on Thursday
announced its $240 million acquisition of mobile payments provider Zong as the online auction giant steps up its expansion into m-commerce. Zong became a popular payment option in the games and social media space by letting users enter their mobile phone numbers to pay for virtual goods purchases to their phone bills or credit cards. The company has relationships with 250 wireless operators worldwide. eBay said Zong would complement and bolster its PayPal service in the fast-growing mobile payments and digital goods area. Apple today announced its App Store crossed the 15 billion-download mark. That works out to an average of 75 app downloads for each of the 200 million iOS device users worldwide. The App Store now offers 425,000 titles, including 100,000 native apps for the iPad. Apple also said it has paid developers $2.5 billion to date. Read more
