  • Ivi Appeals Shut-Down Order
    Online video distributor Ivi has appealed a judge's ruling ordering the company to immediately cease offering streams of TV shows. Ivi filed its notice of appeal with the 2nd Circuit on Tuesday. The company is seeking to overturn an order by U.S. District Court Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald in New York, who issued an opinion last week rejecting Ivi's argument that it's a "cable system" and therefore entitled under federal copyright law to a mandatory license allowing it to stream TV shows.

    Gian Fulgoni, executive chairman and co-founder of comScore, opened OMMA Global in San Francisco Tuesday with an interesting fact: 89 million people in the U.S. will watch at least one video online today. People watch longer form content, helping the time spent viewing to climb. The number of videos viewed per vier in the past year has grown by 75%. Still, with all these people watching video online, the dominate source remains television at 36 hours per week vs 1.4 hours for the total population of the household.
  • Best Buy Jumps Into Free-Delivery Frenzy
    Add Best Buy to the list of big-box retailers looking to jump start home appliance sales. The Minneapolis-based chain is upping the ante on such competitors as Lowe's, Sears, and the Home Depot, and says it is now offering free delivery, haul-away, and no-interest financing on all its home appliance purchases. Retailers and appliance manufacturers have been looking for a way to recapture some of the zing generated last year by the government's Energy Star rebate program.   • YuMe Snags Ex-Transpera Execs
    YuMe has hired a half dozen former top executives including founder Frank Barbieri from mobile video ad firm Transpera, acquired last month by YuMe rival Tremor Media. The move is meant to accelerate YuMe's push into mobile video advertising. Besides Barbieri, who will serve as head of emerging platforms, the new YuMe hires include Anshu Dua, who will lead business development for mobile; Tripp Boyle, senior director, mobile sales; and Sachin Gupta, principal engineer. YuMe last November extended its ACE video ad platform to mobile operating systems including Apple iOS, RIM, Symbian and Android.
