Tablets are adding to the vast inventory mobile ad networks are trying to fill. In an effort to provide greater targeting among tablets, Jesse Marmon Haines, group marketing manager, Mobile Ads, Google, said the company will expand targeting for its AdWords program beyond the iPad to other tablets. Earlier in the day, keynote speaker Chris Needham of Fidelity Investments pointed out mobile ad networks are well positioned to capitalize on the current ineffeciency of tablet advertising as an emerging ad category. But fill rates for mobile advertising overall are only running at about 20%. That ain't very efficient.

Microsoft announced Monday at E3 in Los Angeles that it will make Bing, the company's search engine, and Google's YouTube available through Xbox 360. The company released its vision for television coming this fall, as well as how voice commands will drive search on a variety of networks. These changes aim to make Xbox an entertainment system, rather than game console.

In another case of Facebook unleashing its wrath on an unsuspecting user, some 16-year-old girl in Germany mistakenly invited over 15,000 "friends" to her birthday party after forgetting to set the privacy settings on the invitation. Baltimore-based Under Armour has selected Omnicom Media Group agency Optimum Sports to manage its media account, marking the first time the sports apparel marketer has assigned media planning and buying duties to an outside agency. The National Retail Federation reports that consumers are more willing to dabble in social commerce than many retailers realize, with 42% of those who shop online saying they at least occasionally "follow" a store on a social media. More than 56% of Facebook users have clicked through to a retail site, while 67% of Twitter users have done so.
