Margo Georgiadis, who was appointed chief operating officer of Groupon just five months ago, is leaving the company to return to Google, where she previously served as vice-president of global sales operations, according to the Wall Street Journal. This is the second COO to depart Groupon this year: Rob Solomon left in March, for similarly opaque reasons. The train of executive departures, and widely-reported financial difficulties (including a series of quarterly losses) all call into question the company's stability, potentially jeopardizing its plan for an IPO sometime later this year.

With front-of-packaging labeling systems the hot topic in the food/beverage industries, a new smartphone app that claims to enable users to simply scan/take a snapshot of product barcodes to get all of the (customizable) nutritional information they want seems worthy of note. It also lets the user customize calorie and other nutrient parameters based on their own needs, rather than the serving size used …

The Federal Communications Commission's controversial net neutrality rules will go into effect on Nov. 20, unless blocked by a court. The regulations, which were approved by a 3-2 vote last year, prevent all broadband providers -- wireline and wireless -- from blocking or degrading traffic. The rules also prohibit wireline providers from engaging in unreasonable discrimination. The regulations are expected to be published on Friday, and will take effect around 60 days later.
