The decline of newspaper readership means that many people no longer understand the difference between the media as a whole and the news business, which subscribes to a set of ethical standards not followed by other media sources. David Mindich, professor of media studies at St. Michael’s College in Vermont says that when local newspaper "aren’t there to cover the courthouse, the city hall, then politicians begin to do bad things.”
