Snapchat Launches Ad-Free Subscription Plan

For the first time, Snapchat is offering paying subscribers a plan that allows them to avoid seeing ads on the platform.

“The Platinum Monthly Plan for Snapchat+ lets you enjoy Snapchat+ with no Sponsored Snaps, and no Story or Lens ads,” the social media company explains in its Support blog.

According to a screenshot shared on Threads by user Jonah Manzano, the new Snapchat+ Platinum plan is now live on both the App Store and Google Play Store, and costs $15.99 per month – more than double the price of Snap's regular subscription package.

Snap notes in its description that Platinum subscribers may still see some promotions in sponsored places and My AI responses, but generally won't see any ads while they navigate the app.

Compared to other major social media platforms, Snapchat has the most successful subscriber base, with over 12 million users paying a monthly fee. Third-quarter 2024 results show Snapchat+ adding 1 million new subscribers in just two months.

Users' steady interest in Snapchat+ has provided the company with a new revenue stream that is complementary to its ad business, which still makes up over 90% of its overall revenue intake.

The growing number of paid subscribers also makes Snap a leader in verification-based paid services across the social landscape – surpassing Facebook and X, but still lagging behind premium services from LinkedIn and YouTube.

While the company'sPlatinum plan seems to have quietly launched earlier last month, it is still unclear how many users will choose to pay the price for an ad-free Snapchat experience. Charging a high price to avoid ads would increase the company's additional revenue outside of advertising, but could potentially reduce the value of an ad business Snapchat has fought so hard to rebuild.
