Best Buy will announce new connected TV (CTV) advertising
offerings Wednesday, significantly expanding its reach through enhanced partnerships with major companies and streaming platforms.
The rollout expands a collaboration with Amazon Fire TV.
Under the agreement, Best Buy continues its exclusive manufacturing partnership with Insignia TVs powered by the Fire TV operating system.
This integration gives advertisers access to premium
new ad inventory and data signals, allowing for precise consumer targeting supported by new data signals across free, ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels and premium apps.
The move marks
a major step for Best Buy's retail media network and Best Buy Ads, as it looks to capture a larger share of the rapidly growing streaming advertisement and commerce market.
“Think about
it as the next generation of commerce TV,” Patrick Albano, Best Buy Ads CRO, who joined the company from The Trade Desk in April, told MediaPost.

Multi-touch attribution (MTA)
capabilities beginning Sept. 30 will support all, including upper-, mid- and lower-funnel data signals.
Reporting will show how ads work across channels, and support from artificial
intelligence (AI) will provide suggestions to advertisers on where to invest for future campaigns.
With access to about 10 years of consumer information, the offerings bring unique data
signals to advertisers that want to identify when customers are in the market for new products based on past purchases.
Incrementality testing also is being upgraded to make experiments
faster, easier and more actionable, with simplified processes, lower requirements, better insights, broader channel coverage and more advanced capabilities ahead.
“If you’re
advertising mobile phone plans, in the past you would buy third-party signals based on search behavior or web traffic over a six-month period,” Albano said. “According to those old rules,
it would look like I was shopping for a new phone. I really was shopping for a new plan for my daughter’s Apple watch.”
Because he bought a new phone last year, Albano said he may
not be looking for another new one, but may look for a family carrier plan. He said it is considered a unique data signal that a carrier might want to use to target specific consumer ads.
A
carrier like AT&T or Verizon would purchase the data signals from Best Buy to run 30-second spots across Roku and LG Smart TVs, for example.
The data could also be sold to non-consumer
electronics manufacturers, such as consumer product good companies, as Best Buy expands its capabilities to advertisers wanting to participate in experiential campaigns. The idea is to further
transform its stores into “activation hubs.”
He also said the change surfaced in data from research company Circana, which for two years ran an independent marketing-mix model for
Best Buy’s sales data across four major categories and $2.3 billion in media.
Best Buy Ads were measured alongside some of the largest national media platforms, where return on ad spend
(ROAS) measured above all other national media by 17%.
While it represented just 17% of the media spend Circana analyzed, it accounted for 35% of the study’s measured media contribution
to sales at Best Buy.
Albano also said Best Buy Ads has been working with OpenAI ChatGPT Ads, importing early on the retailer’s catalog. Advertisers do have the opportunity to run ads
through the OpenAI platform through the Best Buy’s “Ask Blue,” the company’s AI-powered conversational shopping and support assistant.
“Best Buy Studios,”
the company’s creative and production team, can create custom creative, content and product videos. On Wednesday it also announced advanced product capabilities through AI.
