  • Timex Starts Marketing Wearable Fitness Tracker
Timex has unveiled the latest chapter in its 162-year history with the Timex IQ+ Move fitness tracker, and the company is being explicit about the brand of style-conscious consumer the wearable is geared towards. Calling the wearable device a panacea to the unenviable situation where “a gaudy silicon band can clash with the image you are trying to portray and make people question your judgment,” the IQ+ Move combines the look of Timex’s watches with the rudimentary features of a fitness tracker, including steps, distance, calories burned, and sleep metrics.

  • After Cyber Attacks, Focus Moves To Making Devices Smarter
Recent cyber attacks harnessing everyday devices such as cameras, video recorders, printers, routers and speakers are a wake-up call to the hidden dangers of the Internet of Things. The problem for the device makers, though, is that few are well equipped to tackle the unfamiliar task of foiling hackers. For a sense of that challenge, take AV Tech Corp, a once proud giant among CCTV camera makers whose 1990s building in a Taipei suburb hints at the gap it must overcome between hardware factories of a decade ago and those of today. AV Tech, which made the 2008 Forbes list …
  • Cisco Promises To Make The Internet of Things Easier
Security was a prominent theme at the Cisco Partner Summit in San Francisco last week, and it’s clear that Cisco intends to play a fundamental role in securing the Internet of Things (IoT). “The internet as we know it today, and the network that you operate, will not work for the Internet of Things,” said Rowan Trollope, Cisco senior vice president and general manager of the IoT and applications group, according to Network World. “We can solve that problem because we own the network.” That assertion comes amid ongoing attacks on IoT devices, including one last month that saw devices such as baby …

  • Google Smart Home Hub Seen As Work In Progress
Google has said that the promise of Google Home — its smart voice-activated speaker — is that I won’t have to break my stride to find a light switch, change the channel, search for music or type something into a search bar again. But the $129 Google Home, which the company sent for me to review last week, stops short of that vision right now. Don’t get me wrong: when Google Home works, it is nothing short of delightful. It just doesn't always work. Overall, I had no problems with set-up and very few problems getting Google to understand me. Even having lived with …
