Federal government spending on Internet of Things (IoT) technology soared 20% year-over-year to $8.8 billion last year, but where the IoT money got spent varied widely. Within the IoT framework that identifies major drivers of federal IoT spending in infrastructure, software and security, it turns out that sensors and data collectors are by far the fastest growing segment, with a whopping 55.9% increase to $1.57 billion, in spending last year, according to research firm Govini, which provided InformationWeek with a breakout of its data.

Sightings of the unmanned aircraft in the skies over the 2,000-year-old Roman Road and Fleam Dyke trail, near Cambridge, have been reported. Amazon has refused to confirm or deny whether it is using the land. But the BBC understands that permission by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has already been granted. There have been sightings from Cambridge Aero Club and land users in the area.

As virtual reality (VR) industry sales have been expanding, reaching an estimated $6.00 billion according to Industrial Distribution Group, Best Buy Co Inc BBY 2.45% has been referred by some analysts, including BTIG’s Alan Rifkin, to be among a list of companies ready to take advantage of the VR’s growth. Rifkin believes VR, the latest emerging category within consumer electronics, could provide significant upside for BestBuy post-2016. Although Rifkin believes Best Buy’s benefit from VR “will be limited,” the analyst sees VR becoming a more meaningful industry contributor, and for Best Buy especially.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the gift that keeps on giving to Amazon. Reporting on quarterly earnings Thursday, Amazon reported $2.89 billion in AWS revenue, up from $1.8 billion last year, putting AWS on track to top $10 billion for the year. More importantly to Amazon's overall business, however, AWS drove 56% of all Amazon profits, gifting the company $1.78 in earnings per share—a massive jump from $0.19 last year. To quote Accenture managing director Mark Sullivan, the forecast for AWS is "cloudy with a chance of extreme revenue." Not to mention ever-improving profitability for the retail giant.

Apple Inc. released a new application for the iPhone that lets users control their Apple TV set-top box, mimicking the functions of the Siri remote control. The app works with the latest Apple TV, which first went on sale in October. The iPhone app allows users to navigate the Apple TV using the smartphone's touchscreen instead of a physical remote. The free app, called Apple TV Remote on the App Store, lets people control games and search on the Apple TV using Siri voice control. General wellness apps and devices won’t face tough FDA scrutiny, as long as they only promote general wellness and present a low risk to the safety of those who use them. In final guidance on the tools, the Food and Drug Administration says the Center for Devices and Radiological Health “does not intend to examine low-risk general wellness products.” Those products include wearables, apps, video games and software programs. Epstein Becker Green health attorney Brad Thompson, who had previously commented toFierceHealthIT on the draft guidance, said in an email the final version "strikes the right balance between regulation and innovation."

Verizon Communications, which just last Monday announced its agreement to acquire Yahoo's core assets for nearly $6 billion including employee stock options, early Monday announced an agreement to buy Fleetmatics Group for $2.4 billion, or $60 per share. The latest acquisition expands the phone company's push into web-connected vehicles and commercial fleet management. Both Verizon and rival AT&T are targeting the Internet of Things, including web-connected cars and telematics services, as a growth market. AT&T and Verizon have forged deals with several automakers for IoT-releated services.
