ESPN was the standout for the Mouse House--with higher advertising and affiliate revenue, along with more subscribers, while broadcast TV ended up in the red due to fewer syndicated sales the shutdown of a mobile phone service. CEO Bob Iger says he has yet to see signs that general economic weakness was hitting advertising (or travel), but the strike that began this week could squeeze …

U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan has introduced a bill to keep the Federal Communications Commission from moving on new media-ownership rules until next year while opening a separate proceeding on broadcast localism. The North Dakota Democrat's "Media Ownership Act of 2007" is co-sponsored by colleagues from both sides of the aisle, including Trent Lott, a Republican from Mississippi. The bill would require the FCC to have a 90-day comment period on any proposed media-ownership rule changes, while forcing it to conduct a separate look at issues of localism and diversity with the same comment period. While the shuttering of House & Garden came as little surprise to those who follow Condé Nast, it has led to speculation about which book may be the next to fold. It's generally believed that a mature magazine at the company needs 1,000 to 1,200 ad pages a year, and "if you're not there, you're not a business," says Condé Nast chief Charles Townsend. "You're just shuffling money around." There are a few other titles that don't meet that criteria, including Cookie, Elegant Bride, Men's Vogue, Golf for Women and Domino. But they may be exceptions, as Cookie, Men's …
