After Wal-Mart removed
Maxim and
Stuff from its racks yesterday, Dennis Publishing issued a strongly worded statement accusing the mass retailer of a double standard in choosing
magazines to display. "Dennis Publishing has been doing business with Wal-Mart for a long time," the statement reads. "Our sales experience in Wal-Mart confirms Wal-Mart customers enjoy
Maxim
and
Stuff. We hope that copies of the two biggest men's lifestyle magazines in America
Maxim and
Stuff -- will be back in these stores soon. Unquestionably, readers will
find
Maxim and
Stuff in their favorite newsstands around the country, since Wal-Mart sales represent only 1% of the total circulation of our magazines.
Maxim and
Stuff
are stocked by approximately 90% of all US retail outlets that sell magazines, a better retail distribution than most monthly consumer magazines. At the same time, we are dismayed at the double
standard Wal-Mart has set with magazines. We hope Wal-Mart will realize that the front covers and contents of
Maxim and
Stuff are no more provocative than those of other men's
magazines such as
GQ, Esquire, Details, and
Rolling Stone -- and usually less provocative than the covers and contents of many women's magazines."
