Singapore Press Holdings is looking to become much more than just a print company operating mainly in its home city, reports
The Star. According to chairman Tony Tan, SPH is going to build
its online presence, develop new print products, and expand a regional magazine and billboard businesses. The group publishes 14 newspapers in Singapore and more than 80 regional magazines regionally,
and hopes to replicate successful titles such as
Her World and
Maxim in regional markets. However, Tan cautions that SPH will have to "invest substantially" in regional ventures to build
scale and profitability before they will be able to contribute to future profits. "Some of these initiatives may not reap immediate monetary returns, but are necessary for sustained growth for SPH
into the future," he says. And online is a big part of the plan: "SPH will keep pace with online developments, and we'll create an exciting interactive environment for our younger readers across the
print, mobile, and online platforms," Tan notes.
