Good Commercial For TV Changeover

  • by October 17, 2008
The best (or is it most interesting?) commercial that I've seen about the transfer is one that COMCAST ran a few months back in my area.

The commercial had a speaker (just one guy) and one prop (a rabbit-ear television set). He says something along the lines of: "Come early next year, everyone will be making the much-talked-about switch over to digital cable. This upgrades the quality of your cable... blah, blah, blah. This also means that if you have one of these older antenna TVs [points to TV set behind him], you're going to need to either call your cable provider and seek out a new TV connection, or get a converter box with a coupon discount from the government."

And then he seals the deal: "But you have COMCAST, so you don't have to worry about it."

The last line of the commercial is what intrigued me the most. It's rather smart, he's basically saying, yes, some people need to switch, and yes, some people find it confusing. But the service you currently have means you don't have anything to worry about. But if you do know someone who has to switch, go to this Web site.

The only detection of irony that I have is that if the commercial only airs in COMCAST territories, with people who don't need to upgrade their service, will the message get to people outside of their range on word of mouth alone?
