The very first medical marijuana ad airs on a California television network, Fox News affiliate, KTXL in Sacramento. The "CannaCare" cannabis commercial" marks the first time a topic surrounded by so much controversy is broadcast on television. Proposition 19 in California is a ballot measure that could allow cannabis to be legalized for medicinal purposes. It has a slight lead in the polls, but there is high-profile opposition from members of the legislature, notes Gather.

The 37-second medical marijuana ad airs the testimonies of marijuana users who praise the medical benefits of its use. Various people explain how it's improved their chronic conditions where conventional medicine has failed.A woman in the cannabis commercial ad, talks about improvement from bone disease. Another shares her story about traumatic injuries from being hit by an intoxicated driver. Still, another woman says, "It changed my life a lot in a sense that I can get on with my daily routine."

Although marijuana was approved back in 1996 for the expressed proposes of therapeutic and medicinal reasons, it has come under fire for various reasons. The main contention that opponents have against the first medical marijuana ad is the impact a message has on children. Marijuana, historically, has been considered taboo, a drug that lands you in jail for its possession or use
