Gemstar-TV Guide Inc. has agreed to pay a record $5.6 million fine to settle a federal lawsuit brought against it by the Justice Department, for actions the two companies took prior to their July 2000
merger. According to federal prosecutors, Gemstar and
TV Guide worked too closely, including fixing prices and sharing subscriber lists between
TV Guide and Gemstar’s service that
provides interactive satellite and cable TV listings.
