Regis Takes Over New Year's Rockin' Eve On ABC For Ailing Clark

  • December 13, 2004
For the first time since he first began rocking in the New Year on ABC in 1972, Dick Clark--who suffered a stroke last week--will be absent from Manhattan's Times Square, as Regis Philbin will fill in as host, an ABC spokeswoman said on Monday. The 33rd "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" broadcast will be hosted instead by morning talk show personality and "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" quiz master Regis Philbin, producers of the ABC television special said.

Singer Ashlee Simpson will host the West Coast portion of the 33rd "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" show.

The 75-year-old Clark was hospitalized in Los Angeles last week. While he hoped to recover in time to host the New Year's show, doctors decided the seemingly ageless "American Bandstand" host and TV producer felt he would not be up to it. -- David Kaplan
