Newspapers Fuel Scripps Growth

Though newspaper revenue continues to present a challenge to Dow Jones and other media giants, E.W. Scripps is reporting revenue growth in its newspaper division for May. Overall corporate revenue for May rose 8.9% to $137 million from the same period a year ago. At the company's newspapers, May revenue rose 5.1% to $63.6 million from the previous year. Newspaper advertising revenue rose 1.9% in May from the year-ago period. Classified and local advertising revenue for May was about even with the same period a year ago; preprint and other advertising revenue rose 12% and national advertising was down 1.4%.

On the cable side, Scripps Networks' advertising revenue rose 16% to $31.1 million, and affiliate fee revenue rose 27% to $6.3 million. Based on advance sales, the company now expects Scripps Networks' advertising revenues to increase about 14% for the second quarter. The company previously anticipated an 8% to 12% increase in Scripps Networks advertising revenues. Scripps Networks includes Home & Garden Television, the Food Network, the Do It Yourself Network and Fine Living.
