Showtime May Pony Up For "Arrested Development"

Fox TV's Emmy Award-winning "Arrested Development," which recently was canceled, may be picked up by Showtime, according to rumors circulating throughout the industry.  If true, it would be an expensive proposition for the pay-cable channel: the "Arrested Development" cast, which includes Jeffrey Tambor, Jason Bateman, and Portia de Rossi, among others, would command a very significant combined salary.  According to a story in the Hollywood Reporter, Showtime is in discussions with "Arrested" producers 20th Century Fox and Imagine TV about picking up the quirky comedy from creator/exec producer Mitch Hurwitz.  Last month, in saying "Arrested" would not be picked up for a fourth season, Fox cut its third-season order to 13 from 22.  While the show has been a critic's darling from the start and has received numerous accolades for its daring conceit, loyal viewers were too few in their numbers to sustain "Arrested" beyond its brief run on Fox.
