Disney Hangs Up On Mobile ESPN

In an indicator of the competition in the cellular industry, Mobile ESPN, a start-up cell phone company backed by Walt Disney Co., announced on Thursday that it is closing operations and will reinvent itself as a content partner of the bigger wireless carriers. The company, which launched earlier this year at the Super Bowl, developed cell phones featuring sports-focused content and features. Cellular leaders Cingular Wireless and Sprint Nextel recently announced major enhancements to their own sports-oriented programming.
