Vivisimo Aims for Mobile, Site Search

  • June 13, 2007

Pittsburgh-based search software firm Vivisimo launched Clusty Mobile, a version of its Clusty.com search site optimized specifically for mobile Web browsing.

Clusty's search technology organizes results according to relevant topics and categories. In addition to minimizing the number of results pages for mobile Web users to view, the cluster-based interface reduces the number of words users need to type into a search box. Clusty Mobile then optimizes any Web site the user clicks on for viewing on a small screen.

Vivisimo has also released a white paper detailing the "Seven Deadly Sins of Site Search," a list of common mistakes some Fortune 500 companies make with their home pages' basic search functionality.

"These companies spend so much time and money to optimize their page rank on major search engines, all in an attempt to drive traffic to their site," said Rebecca Thompson, vice president of marketing, Vivisimo. "But once a user gets to the site, what do they do? They search. And companies are missing out on the opportunity to use site search to create a conversion activity."

The white paper lists examples of major brands and products, including Yum and Claritin, that lack site search functionality, provide broken links, require Boolean search terms, or otherwise deter effective navigation.
