Google Offers Software Developers $10 Million In Prizes

  • November 13, 2007
Google said Monday it will offer a total of $10 million in prize money to software developers who build applications for its new Android mobile operating system.

Cash prizes from $25,000 to $275,000 will be awarded to participants whose applications are selected by a panel of technology and mobile experts. The Android Developer Challenge is aimed at spurring the creation of user-friendly content and services for Google-powered phones. Last week, the search giant announced plans to develop its open mobile platform in partnership with an alliance of more than 30 wireless carriers and handset makers. A key to the effort's success is attracting developers to create programs for the platform, which will in turn draw consumers.

The first round of contest submissions will be accepted from Jan. 2 through March 3, 2008. The 50 most promising entries will each receive $25,000 awards to fund further development. Those entries will then be eligible for ten awards worth $275,000 each, and another ten worth $100,000 each. The top applications will be chosen by the end of May 2008.
