Call It Love Canal!

Forget flowers, how about the sweet scent of King's County effluence? The Department of Environmental Protection is marketing the Newtown Creek Wastewater treatment plant with a Valentine's Day Tour.

“It’s a unique date, and one they’ll never forget,” said plant superintendent Jim Pynn. Visitors will get candy. “New York is so unique, and we have so many secrets. This is a pretty neat secret, and I think it’s a great conversation,” Pynn said. “Just imagine going home and saying, ‘Where did he take me on Valentine’s Day? I went to see the digester eggs in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.”

The tour involves walks through the egg-shaped digesters, which act like a human stomach and break down the noxious waste into harmless sludge and gas (you have seen these if you've driven along the BQE. “We end it on top of the digester eggs with not only a beautiful view of the Manhattan skyline, but the entire 53-acre Newtown plant,” Pynn said. I'm in!
